All-Star Alvarado's Injury Hurts Dragons Chances

(CBL Newswire) - By Niko Jackoman of the Moose Jaw Melorist

At the trade deadline things were looking good for the Moose Jaw Dragons. They had improved their offence with a trade for RF Champ Supino. They had improved their defense with a trade for SS Phil Apt. They had improved their pitching with a trade for RHP Honus Schmiege. They had opened up a bit of a lead on their division rivals the mighty Regina Pirates. The Dragons seemed to be heading straight towards their fourth consecutive Farmers East Division Championship.

But in August things started to go wrong. The hitting and pitching took turns slumping, leading to a seven-game losing streak. And then on August 17 during a loss to the Lethbridge Typhoon All-Star 3B Jerry Alvarado suffered an injury (an inflamed bicep tendon) that will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Team doctors expect Alvarado to be ready by spring training but until then 3B goes from a strength to a problem for the Dragons. Veteran Crawford Sterlace is expected to fill in for Alvarado for the remainder of the season. Sterlace was the Dragons starting third baseman for the teams first two seasons and has been playing for the team's AAA affiliate this season.

Alvarado finishes the season with a .258 average in 120 games, 80 runs, 36 doubles, 20 homers, 54 RBI, and 15 stolen bases.
