News of Rockets Departure Spark Riots in Montreal!

(CBL Newswire) - By Heywood Jablomi of the Associated Press

Tensions boiled over today in Montreal, after the news that the Montreal Rockets move to Drummondville was made official by CBL Commisioner James Wesley last night. Stores were vandalized, and traffic was shut down on Ste - Catherine Street as an estimated 65000 Montreal Rockets supporters marched on the Sheraton Centre Hotel, where the Mayor of Montreal was hosting a meeting of the World Trade Organization.

The Mayor of Montreal, Mr. Gerald Temblay attempted to quell the crowd by stating that the move to Drummondville was false and it was a conspiracy to get him out of office! Which almost quelled the angry mob until the GAP on Ste - Catherine Street just then placed out their new line of Drummondville Doughboys clothing. To make matters worse Rockets owner and GM Shane Hoopfer was in the Burger King across the street from the riot eating a whopper in his new Doughboy uniform (going for a reasonable $69.95 at the GAP) Hoopfer was quoted as yelling into the crowd "If it wasn't for Tremblay the Rockets would have stayed!"
Once Hoopfer's comments reached the entire mob they snapped. The Mayor was pelted with rotting vegetables and cream pies, and was dragged to saftey by 2 RCMP officers. Unforutnately the rioters turned even more sour and started to beat on a small anti-WTO protest group. Fortunately we are happy to report that there were no serious injuries or arrests, as the RCMP seemed to side with the mob. However, the cost of the cleanup is estimated at $35000. Certainly a sad day in the history of Montreal, and a tragic representation of the leadership displayed by Mayor Tremblay!
