Team of The Decade Awards

(CBL Newswire) - By J-Dogg of the PEI Gazette

Winner: Lethbridge Typhoon 2006

Runner-up: Moose Jaw Dragons 2003 & Leduc Grizzlies 2007

Honourable Mentions: Leduc Grizzlies 2005, Lethbridge Typhoon 2004

Arguably, the best team ever to play in the CBL was the Lethbridge squad of 2006. Boasting names such as Dejarnette, Dortch and Janks, this team tore up any team who dared to put up a fight.

A 116-46 record, and an easy first place is why the CBL owners picked this team as the best of the Decade. During this record-setting year, the Typhoon hit .302 while smashing 250 Hr’s and swiping over 175 bags! As it is well known, a team cannot win the BFTB without great pitching. With guys like Tellesfrud and Dejarnette pitching for them, the Typhoon had a 3.99 ERA in the hitter friendly Epi-Center. Their WHIP was a franchise low 1.286 and the K/BB ratio was 2.040.

While a team may dominate the regular season, they must do well in the playoffs for anything to matter. To start off the playoffs, Lethbridge downed Leduc in round one. They then went through the great Farmers team of Regina and stomped all over them. In the final round, the Typhoon were pitted in a match-up against the amazing Ottawa Milkmen who walked through every other Fishermen team to get to the BFTB. After six games, nothing could be decided and the teams played one last final game to decide the league winner. The Lethbridge Typhoon prevailed and won the BFTB.

For these reasons and more, that is why the Lethbridge Typhoon of 2006 have been voted as the CBL Team of The Decade.

Now that all awards have been presented, next week, we will be featuring a summary of the CBL Decade Awards. After that, one last article... a surprise from the good ol’ boys of PEI!
