The Holy Grail

(CBL Newswire) - By Doian Lines of the Owen Sound Sun Times

In what was possibly the last chance for the Owen Sound Crusaders to grab the St George's Shield for a few years at least, leaving players gave the travelling fans a glimpse of may have been. Coach Colvin opted to play his Val D'or bound players, Campbell, Ducotey, and McKenzie in an effort to rest the prize away from the mighty Dragons of Moose Jaw.

The travelling fans were whipped into a frenzy by the now famous Crusaders horsemen who made a rare appearance away from the stronghold of Crusader Park and were then mesmerised by a pitching contest of the highest order.

Crowd favourite Wayne (Ginge) Campbell pitched with plenty of heart to get the win, saying this was his way of thanking the fans for their support for him over the seasons. He kept the Crusaders in the game, eventually seeing off Dragons legend Aaron Faville in the 8th, before being relieved by Isak Markway who pitched the final out for the save.

While the pitching was tight, it was two more Shark bound Crusaders who lead the way. Ole Ducotey homered in the 4th and Olin McKenzie hit a 2 run homer in the 9th after a rusty Ross Becker threw a wild one and hit John Lange.

Coach Colvin admitted that the game really highlights what could have been for Owen Sound and makes the difficult year looming ahead seem all the harder to accept. I asked him if he was concerned that some are even now saying that the Crusaders would have been better served by testing their depth rather than doing Val D'or anymore favours. He looked up at me and smiled, his team had just pinched the St George's Shield from under the feet of one very pissed off Dragon.
