Karl Blandford
Relief Pitcher | Regina Pirates
Pitching His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. The Regina Pirates hope he can work on his control a little bit. Every once and a while one slips away from him and either ends up at the backstop or in the right field bleachers. Sometimes I wish he'd just give up on throwing the changeup, it's like a BP ball! When you throw a curveball, it better break. Hanging curves equal earned runs in this league, you just can't get away with them. Unfortunately, Blandford's curveball tends to hang. The running movement on his pitches makes life tougher on lefties than righties.
Defense & Hitting His pickoff move is only fair. Blandford is nothing special in the field. Blandford is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Blandford has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Regina Pirates have been known to use Blandford as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2025 Outlook I can't say I know what The Regina Pirates were doing locking this guy up to a long term contract. A questionable call at best. Blandford has below average skills, even for the low minors. One has to expect the Regina Pirates will give him his walking papers before the end of the season. I just don't know if The Regina Pirates are ever going to get what they expect out of him.
