Kirby Fernholz
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching Though Fernholz can't just blow the ball by hitters, he has some giddyup on his fastball. His curveball is solid; he throws it better than your average starter. Fernholz has to keep the ball down, especially against lefties, or he gets hit hard and often. The Retired or Inactive Players hope he can work on his control a little bit. Every once and a while one slips away from him and either ends up at the backstop or in the right field bleachers. His stuff becomes less sharp as he gets into the late innings. Dating back to his days in the minors, Fernholz has been more effective against righthanders than lefthanders.
Defense & Hitting His pickoff move is merely average. He tends to fall off slightly to the first-base side of the mound, making him vulnerable to bunts toward third base. He makes up for that minor flaw by being aggressive in fielding his position. Fernholz is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Fernholz has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Fernholz as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2025 Outlook Fernholz has below average skills, even for the low minors. One has to expect the Retired or Inactive Players will give him his walking papers before the end of the season. I just don't know if The Retired or Inactive Players are ever going to get what they expect out of him.
