Scott Hayner
Relief Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching He can hit 90 MPH but is too smart to try to get his fastball past most hitters. If you're going in to face Hayner, better be wearing plenty of protection. He's wild. Hayner has no endurance. He's good for an inning an outing, tops. When you throw a curveball, it better break. Hanging curves equal earned runs in this league, you just can't get away with them. Unfortunately, Hayner's curveball tends to hang. In his first taste of the majors, he has kept lefthanders in check but wasn't as effective against righties.
Defense & Hitting Hayner has a lousy move to first, and opposing managers will run against him all day. Hayner comes off the mound hard toward the third base side on his delivery, making it difficult for him to field balls to the right side or to cover first base on a close play. Hayner is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Hayner has some pop in his swing.
2025 Outlook Hayner was a rule-five pickup for the Retired or Inactive Players last year. I think The Retired or Inactive Players just didn't want to be left out of the Rule-V draft, why else would you sign Hayner? But if you ask me, I'll pass on Hayner.
