Bruce Ta
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching He produces tons of groundballs with his downward movement. Ta performs extremely well in the late innings, but unfortunately his endurance prevents him from getting there very often. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. The Retired or Inactive Players hope he can work on his control a little bit. Every once and a while one slips away from him and either ends up at the backstop or in the right field bleachers. Sometimes I wish he'd just give up on throwing the changeup, it's like a BP ball! The running movement on his pitches makes life tougher on lefties than righties.
Defense & Hitting He's reasonably quick to the plate but needs to vary his pickoff moves. Good baserunners appeared to time him last year. Ta seems distracted after his delivery. He's sometimes out of position, fails to cover a base or doesn't back up throws. Ta is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Ta has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Ta as a pinch-runner on occasion.
