Don Vickering
Relief Pitcher | Lethbridge Typhoon
Pitching He's a good late inning man, which is when being a pitcher really counts. Vickering has to keep the ball down, especially against lefties, or he gets hit hard and often. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. The Lethbridge Typhoon hope he can work on his control a little bit. Every once and a while one slips away from him and either ends up at the backstop or in the right field bleachers. Sometimes I wish he'd just give up on throwing the changeup, it's like a BP ball! Vickering has had a tendency to fall victim to big innings. In his first taste of the majors, he has kept righthanders in check but wasn't as effective against lefties.
Defense & Hitting Though he lacks a good pickoff move, he checks the running game with a compact stretch delivery. He hurts himself by falling awkwardly off the mound in his follow-through, which allows too many balls to go through the middle for base hits. Vickering is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Vickering has some pop in his swing.
2025 Outlook The Lethbridge Typhoon signed him to a long-term contract, but don't think they won't drop Vickering like a hot potato if something better comes along.
