Trae Althaus
Starting Pitcher | Grand Rapids Red Dogs
Pitching Althaus is a control pitcher; when he's on he has pinpoint control. Althaus has to keep the ball down, especially against lefties, or he gets hit hard and often. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. His stuff becomes less sharp as he gets into the late innings. Dating back to his days in the minors, Althaus has been more effective against righthanders than lefthanders.
Defense & Hitting Althaus's forte is holding runners at bay. Althaus has lots of energy. He comes off the mound like a cat and doesn't make many errors. Althaus is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Althaus has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Grand Rapids Red Dogs have been known to use Althaus as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2025 Outlook The Grand Rapids Red Dogs signed him to a long-term contract, but don't think they won't drop Althaus like a hot potato if something better comes along.
