Everet Smithingell
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching He's a pretty good ground-ball pitcher, which I like because ground balls stay in the park. Smithingell can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. Smithingell also has a decent changeup. His stuff becomes less sharp as he gets into the late innings. He attacks lefties and righties with similar success.
Defense & Hitting His move to first isn't very good, but his delivery is fairly quick and he isn't overly vulnerable to the stolen base. Smithingell's follow-through leaves him in a vulnerable position, so he has trouble with comebackers. Smithingell is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Smithingell has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Smithingell as a pinch-runner on occasion.
