Wylie Spead
Relief Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching The Retired or Inactive Players hope he can work on his control a little bit. Every once and a while one slips away from him and either ends up at the backstop or in the right field bleachers. You know, some times I think I can throw harder than Spead, and that's saying a lot. Poor location often leads to a barrage of homers. Spead has no endurance. He's good for an inning an outing, tops. But Spead, do us a favor. Stop throwing that changeup. It looks like a beachball. When you throw a curveball, it better break. Hanging curves equal earned runs in this league, you just can't get away with them. Unfortunately, Spead's curveball tends to hang. In his first taste of the majors, he has kept lefthanders in check but wasn't as effective against righties.
Defense & Hitting Spead doesn't field his position well. Spead has a lousy move to first, and opposing managers will run against him all day. Spead is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Spead has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Spead as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2025 Outlook But if you ask me, I'll pass on Spead.
