Newt Vermeulen
Second Baseman | Retired or Inactive Players
Hitting He has the mental discipline to handle clutch situations. The book on Vermeulen is that you can knock the bat out of his hands with an average major league fastball. Vermeulen always has been a line-drive hitter who uses the entire field. Even though you might not start him, he's not a bad guy to have on your bench for the tough left-handed reliever.
Baserunning & Defense Vermeulen doesn't have great speed, though he reads righthanders' moves well enough to steal a handful of bases each season without getting caught very often. His glovework leaves a lot to be desired. His biggest problem in the field simply has to be his throwing arm... it's well below par.
