Paul Shildknecht
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching Shildknecht likes to get hitters looking down and away, then ties them up by coming inside with hard stuff, getting a lot of groundball outs. He's a good late inning man, which is when being a pitcher really counts. Shildknecht can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. Steals sometimes unnerve Shildknecht, who isn't blessed with extraordinary self-confidence. When his release point drops below three-quarters, his fastball tends to hang in the strike zone. He changes speeds well enough to keep righthanders from teeing off on him.
Defense & Hitting Shildknecht fields his position well. He doesn't hold runners very close, which gives his catcher a bit of a workout. Shildknecht is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Shildknecht has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Shildknecht as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2025 Outlook If Shildknecht doesn't perform, the Retired or Inactive Players won't hesitate to send him down to the minors. I just don't know if The Retired or Inactive Players are ever going to get what they expect out of him.
