Bill Claire
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching God, who doesn't love a knuckler? I saw a slow-motion version of one of his pitches on TV, it's no wonder they're unhittable! Claire can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. When his release point drops below three-quarters, his fastball tends to hang in the strike zone. Claire also has a decent changeup. He attacks lefties and righties with similar success.
Defense & Hitting He's reasonably quick to the plate but needs to vary his pickoff moves. Good baserunners appeared to time him last year. He isn't especially quick off the mound but generally fields his position adequately. Claire is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Claire has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Claire as a pinch-runner on occasion.
